By Plank Spanker
This is a good, likely one of the better SG style guitars on the market. The one I had, and all I have looked at, had exceptionally good QC, and a very nice finish. I bought mine used and the former owner had installed a DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. The pots for the 2 volume and 2 tones were the asian dime sized but functioned and sounded very good. The tuning keys were perhaps a little cheaper than the Epiphone G-400 and the tone was brighter especially the neck position pickup. I suspected the wood type had to do with that.I had read conflicting reviews about the body wood type, some saying Mahogany, some alder, some plywood, etc. so I went to the Jay Turser site and they do not say. I emailed them and in their reply they said it was either Basswood or Alder depending upon the production run which, I suspect means what is cheapest at the time of purchase, but that's just my opinion. Anyway, if you couple that with the set maple neck and the probable fact the pickups are ceramic magnet (I know the Dimarzio is) that would account for the difference in tone to the Epiphone G-400. I also have a G-400 and since the Epi has a mahogany (which is NOT the same as the Mahogany used for Gibsons etc. , it is instead a wood in the mahogany family with maybe some of the same qualities for guitar tone wood) anyway mahogany body, set mahogany neck and alNico pickups it has a darker sound.I can't really say why, but the JT "felt" better than the Epi and seemed a little more balanced. If your looking for this style guitar then they are a good choice if you don't want to shell out for a Gibson. I know the JT50 and the Samick Torino can be had for 100 to 150 bucks used in good shape very often and new for 190 to 250. The Epi used is still around 300+ and 400+ new. Also the Torino is a little closer to the Epi too, in fact it fells the same to me, yes I have had one. Anyway, go for a set neck instead of bolt-on neck unless the bolt is string thru body and a good deal, again, IMO. Have a good one!
