5Honest review from long time Amazon Vine Reviewer
By All Powerful Wizard Of Oz
I had been wanting to make the leap to 3D ever since I heard 3D would become available to the public for home use on HDTVs. Having priced a few out I just did not feel it was worth the jump quite yet. Then I came across this TV on Amazon. I did a lot of research finding reviews and reading impressions from various HD forums. Finally I went to Best Buy to try this out for myself and was quite impressed. So after much debate I picked one up with one pair of glasses since it's just me. Got a deal for $969 and that is with tax. Prior to I owned a 47inch 1080p Vizio which I've had for 3 years and was a great set for the price point as well. I can say without a shadow of doubt that even without the 3D feature the picture quality of this TV for Bluray blows away my old 1080p Vizio. Not sure how that is possible since this set is at a lower resolution but there is no fooling my eyes and what I am saying is true. The colors are vivid and the blacks are REAL black. The Vizio which was an LCD always had a white glare from back light issues of the bulbs.Video games look fantastic. My only issue with the set is two things. My PC did look better on the Vizio because it offered a much brighter picture and on the Samsung it's not as bright. Not a deal killer but this should be noted. The other issue is with 3D games only such as Avatar, Pacific Drift 3D and MLB the show the resolution is also meh in 3D mode compared to non 3D games which look banging.I have yet to try out a 3D movie but ordered Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House on Amazon and will edit this review to include impressions of those two true 3D movies. The 2D-3D conversion looks fantastic on Blurays and broadcast TV so that's a win for this set. It's like this, if you REALLY want a 3D set as I did and do not want to spend an arm and a leg as what other sets cost this is your best bet as the technology evolves and improves. If anything you will be getting a fantastic HDTV set for a fraction of what some of the other higher end sets cost and will tide you over until the technology reaches a point of 3D sans glasses which is what I am waiting for. Honestly there is very little difference between this 720p and 1080p models.Great value for what you get.EDIT Review day 2:Just wanted to say that I am just in love with this TV.One example I wanted to share is I recently got the Alien movies on Bluray and had been waiting to watch them until I had this TV in place so I could try out the 2D-3D conversion. Well I can tell you that I am on the 2nd movie Aliens and have the this feature turned on with a depth of 10 so it's peaked out and my god it looks amazing. It's almost as if the movie was filmed in 3D but I realize a lot of that has to do with the way Cameron shot the film so kudos to him for being a visionary back in 1986 because it just rocks. Especially any of the scenes in space the level of depth really brings you in when this feature is turned on. Amazing.Still waiting on my delivery of the Blurays that are True 3D and will post impressions as soon as I get them.Edit Review day 4:Just finished watching Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. Without a doubt this TV delivers the real deal with 3D as if you are in the theater. The movie looked great in 3D. Was sharp and the 3D truly pops. I am still blown away however at the 2D-3D conversion for other Bluray movies. I also for the fun of it popped in Star Wars on DVD and yes it works great with that as well.I just cannot praise enough about how awesome this TV is for the price point and have zero regrets about picking one up.Edit Review 1 week later:The TV continues to blow me away with each movie I watch in the 2D-3D conversion. The glasses were the only issue with this set. I got the free pair that came with it. What was happening was that the glasses would lose sync during scenes with high action or a lot of light. What fixed it was taking a small piece of opaque tape and placing it over the sensor on the glasses. Ever since the picture has been perfect. A small irritation that has an easy quick fix but felt I should point it out to any other owners of this set or anyone planning on getting one on how to avoid/fix the issue.

5Great 2D, 2.5D, and 3D performance for a nice price...
By Critter_FL
Been in the market for a new Master Bedroom HDTV since our 30" HD CRT broke (yay!). Been following this model (PN50C490) since it was announced recently. I found a great deal at a local B&M store the week this was released (2 free pair of 3D glasses included) for the same price as elsewhere. I've been watching this plasma for over a week, and just love it!We feed it HD service from DirecTV and it looks stunning. Realistic colors and very dark blacks, no ghosting on sports (it is a plasma after all), and we love the upgrade in the size (30" to 50") as viewed from 12-15 feet away in bed. The 2D picture quality beats the old CRT and even our main DLP set in the family room. DirecTV has a few 3D channels, so those were demoed immediately. The X-Games replay looked awesome. I think most sports are recorded in 720p anyway, so there was no loss of quality on this 720p set. I was able to watch the football games this weekend in a pseudo 3D upscale (I'm calling it 2.5D). It certainly did something to the picture, and I liked it. It really added some depth that made the game more enjoyable to watch. Not quite as good as a proper 3D broadcast or actually being there in person, but given the little bit of 3D programming available, the 2.5D conversion was pretty impressive and worked on demand. No eye strain noticed when wearing the glasses as I was able to watch 3 hours of football without issue. Waiting for the PS3 firmware update to try some 3D Blu-rays on this set, but I don't think that there will be any issues in the 720p versus 1080p resolutions. I'll try to post an update on PS3 3D gaming impressions as well (which Sony limits to 720p anyway). Overall, I am VERY impressed with the 2D quality of this set. Love the size improvement for our master bedroom given our viewing distances. And both 2.5D and 3D viewing was great at 720p. From what I have seen, there is nothing to worry about this set not being 1080p. Just pull the trigger, buy it, and enjoy the money you'll be saving over the competition.

5Best value 3D TV
By Mohammad Masud Hasan
First of all, seeing is believing. Me and my wife both visit Sears and HHGREGG stores multiple times to compare plasma vs. LCD/LED and 720p vs. 1080p. We find that plasma is better than LCD/LED in terms of color and other features for picture quality. The lower brightness of plasma is not an issue since there is not much light in our TV room. (In fact, Samsung PN50C490 plasma has "Dynamic" picture mode to view at higher brightness, but we mostly use less bright "Movie" picture mode so that it is less stressful to eyes at night.) We both cannot differentiate much between 720p and 1080p plasma TVs, even watching as close as suggested for 3D viewing (e.g., about 7 feet for 50 inch). Moreover, because of plasma's superior color contrast, saturation, accuracy, and frequency, both me and my wife feel better viewing experience in a 720p plasma than in a 1080p (yes!) LCD/LED when we compare those in store display side by side. Therefore, we decide not to spend another $400+ just to get 1080p or LCD/LED. Those who are still confused, please read CNET TV buying guide. "According to the Imaging Science Foundation, a group that consults for home-theater manufacturers and trains professional video calibrators, the most important aspect of picture quality is contrast ratio the second most important is color saturation, and the third is color accuracy. Resolution comes in fourth, despite being the most-cited HDTV specification." Thus, resolution is the feature that we can compromise to save money.Secondly, we think about energy-efficiency. From power specifications available online, we calculate how much energy would be saved if we buy LCD/LED rather than this plasma. We find the purchase price to be paid for LCD/LED is much higher than the energy-cost we would save, even for 10 years! (If you consider 10 years inflation of the extra money you have to pay today for LCD/LED, the difference is even more.) As the 3D technology evolves, I am sure future 3D TVs would be much better than current 3D TVs and I am probably not going to watch the same TV for many years (even if I buy the best 3D TV available now). Therefore, I am saving money buying this plasma, plus getting amazing picture quality. By this time, let 3D LED TVs get mature and cheaper. Remember, currently advertised LED TVs in the market are not actual LED-panel TVs, they are just LCD-panel TVs with LED back-lighting/edge-lighting/local-dimming. Plasma is already matured, we think. For example, the burn-in problem is much reduced in latest plasma TVs. Additionally, Samsung PN50C490 has anti-burn pixel shifting feature, which we set always on.Thirdly, even though PN50C490 does not have internet connectivity, it quickly becomes a non-issue given that I must buy a 3D Bluray player to watch 3D content. Most 3D players (in fact, all Samsung 3D Bluray players) come with internet connectivity! Hence, we do not go for higher-end 3D TV versions (e.g., PN50C7000 or PN50C8000 or other brands) to get internet connectivity within TV. Let our player do the job.Fourthly, we have a kid who has a tendency to throw things! Although we do not expect TVs to endure flying objects, it is good that Plasma screen is tougher than LCD/LED screen (according to a CNET forum). Hence, plasma is a rational choice for us.Last but not least, this Samsung model has 2D to 3D conversion and picture-in-picture (PIP) capabilities.Recently, we have actually watched 3D Christmas Carol and other 2D Bluray movies using a Samsung BDC-5900 player. With our limited experience, we must say Samsung PN50C490 delivers us the best 3D and 2D television amusement we ever had. The TV and accessories together cost below a grand! By the by, we have bought this TV for $807 shipped, no tax, including two glasses in an online deal during the Thanksgiving week of Nov, 2010. We also have bought a BDC-5900 player for $119 and an HDMI cable for $1.

5Bose lost a sale!
By Michael S.
I have a 35 year old Zenith clock radio. I told myself that someday, if this clock radio ever died, I will spoil myself and buy a Bose wave radio to replace it. Alas, that day has arrived. I went online to order my Bose wave, and learned that some IDIOT at Bose had decided it would be a good idea to eliminate all the control buttons from the unit, and control everything from a tiny little remote! This does not make the wave a good choice for use as a bedside alarm clock. Imagine trying to find which microscopic button to push to silence the alarm while you are half asleep! Nice going Bose - you just lost a sale! Thus began my search for a replacement. I did not find anything at the local big box stores that did not look and sound cheap. Another big factor for me was the brightness of the display. Most are too bright for me - even with a dimmer function. I found this Yamaha on Amazon, and seemed a viable alternative to the Bose, so I decided to take a chance and order it. The only hesitation I had was that I could not determine if this unit had a battery back-up for the clock. I even went to Yamaha's website for this info, but could not find it there either. Apparently, there is some kind of backup system, as the instructions state the time information will be lost if unplugged for more than one week. It must have an internal capacitor of some sort - I'm guessing. The sound is impressive! I do not own an Ipod, but I would imagine the sound quality would be even better from that source than that of the radio. It is hard to imagine the sound quality that comes out of such a small package. My wife made the comment that it sounds better than the stereo we also have in the bedroom! This unit is much smaller than I imagined, but this is a good thing. It does not take up a lot of space on my nightstand. The display brightness is adjustable, and is perfect for me on the lowest setting. It has an automatic setting that self adjusts to ambient room light, and is very legible at all settings. Overall, I am very pleased and impressed with this system. I hope it serves me as well as my old Zenith did.

4Almost perfect, but NOT as an alarm clock
By Nancy Mcilwain
Sounds GREAT for something this size. Adjustable base and treble, deep base, easy to use, excellent build and quality, the snooze bottom is not too terribly close to any button that would turn off the alarm, nice features on the remote unit and it looks awesome. The "alarm" button is fairly close to the snooze and will disarm the alarm if pushed by mistake, but the snooze is right in the middle and fair size, so I think the placement is acceptable. It is also much smaller than I expected and takes up less space on my nightstand than I thought it would.FYI-I have an iPhone 4 and this charges and plays perfectly. There is no message that comes up when it is docked stating that this device was not made for iPhone............Also, there is zero GSM interface. You do not need to put your iPhone 4 into airplane mode. This unit works perfect for the iPhone! The dimmer goes pretty dim, but I think many would like just one step dimmer. My major complaint would be the lack of a backup battery and not being able to sleep to selected iPhone music and wake to a different track. If you use the sleep timer to go to sleep at night, that same track will be used as the alarm track, as the unit will only use the last song listened to as the wake up track. I listen to quiet relaxing music to fall asleep and need a different song to wake to. So, I need to select the buzzer and miss out on being able to wake to a select track on my iPhone. The critical thing missing is a backup battery. There is a built-in battery that will save the time setting if you unplug it, but it will only save the time setting and the alarm will NOT sound if the unit loses power. I think this is a major mistake. I need the peace of mind of a full backup battery so I know the alarm will sound in the event of a power failure.I also searched and searched for iPhone and iPod adapters in the box and then realized that the unit does not come with any. This is fine, but there is a large gap behind my iPhone which allows the iPhone or iPod to be pushed backwards when you push on the screen.Overall, this is a great unit, but I will be returning it for the negatives that I pointed out. These missing features may not be important to you. If you do not care about the lack of a backup battery or being able to pick different tracks for sleep and wake, then I would highly recommend this unit.

5BIG SOUND small size
By Brad
I ordered this to replace a Tivoli Model One that I enjoyed for over 10 years. Over time the radios reception deteriorated, and having to plug and unplug the aux cable over and over became a drag. The Yamaha sounds as good, maybe better then the Tivoli which is saying a lot. It fills the room (kitchen and dining area) with music. The tuner's very strong. Having a remote is nice. The tone control on the back is to adjust the amount of bass boost. For instance, when I'm listening to a podcast of people talking, I turn it all the way down to eliminate any boominess. All the control knobs have a very nice, quality feel to them. Most of the top buttons are lighted. I couldn't ask more from such a compact radio. Finding great sound in a small package with AM-FM and a ipod dock was a tough combination. I've been shopping for over a year so you can imagine how many I've looked at and listened to. As a bonus I really like the semi-retro look. The more I use it the better I like it. A bit pricey, but money well spent !!!

Saltron is easy to install, economical and fully automatic. No more purchasing, transportation or storage of chlorine. No more skin irritations and itchy red eyes. No more faded bathing suits. Saltron Retro includes a programmable digital timer to adjust chlorine output and LED indicator lights illuminate for easy salt level reference. The commercial grade titanium cell plates reverse polarity keeps cell clean and prevents scaling. The clear salt cell housing allows user to easily inspect cell for scaling. Switch-mode power supply provides smooth current to cell resulting in longer lifetime. Saltron systems work on a salt level to 3,000 ppm.

5Pool Ownership is much more enjoyable now
By Patty1wahm
Received my Saltron Retro Pool Chlorine Generator a few days ago. Was easy to assemble and get started. My pool is balanced and sparkling clean without much effort these days. I feel like I can actually spend more time having fun in the pool with my kids and not having to spend so much time maintaining it. And I am positive that this device will definitely pay for itself since I know longer have to purchase chlorine. We are also enjoying the fact that we no longer have that harsh burning to our eyes when we jump in. I've also noticed that my skin is no longer all dried out when I get out of the pool.

5WORTH EVERY PENNY!
By Darlene Garrison
This has been the best carefree maintenance product for an above ground pool that we have experienced. It beats spending $500+ on chemicals all summer and continuously fighting algae, etc. We put the recommended amount of salt in to start and plugged in the Saltron. You will need to add a stabilizer to retain the chlorine made by the Saltron. Other than that, we were done for the summer except for periodic cleaning of debris in the pool. Everyone has loved the feel of the water (much softer and not as harsh as chlorine tablets). Doesn't dry your hair or skin out and doesn't burn your eyes.

I have a 25k gallon in-ground pool. bought the saltron a month ago and converted pool to salt-water system.by using the salt-level strips and over the course of 3-4 days I added about 480 lbs of morton pool salt (12x 40lbs bags) to reach the ideal level of salt.I made sure the pool is balanced, my fc level raised from 0 to 2ppm over the course of a week and stays constant at 2. to compensate the extra 5k gallon of water, I did add 3 chlorine tablets just in case if not enough fc. but looks like that won't be necessary in the future

5Great buy at a great price
By R.D. Searle
I've owned a Yamaha RX-V2095 for the past 12 years. Weighing in at 45 lbs it's an understatement that it has some power. The only thing it lacked was HDMI capability, which is why I upgraded to the RX-A700. The sound fields are more precise with having the 7.1 surround. Memo to those of you upgrading, this unit has a built in secondary amp for zone 2 (too cool). But be aware you can only play analog signals through zone 2, so be sure to hook up the analog cables along with all the HDMI ones. That was fun figuring out! The YPAO feature is awesome. It's a tiny microphone that plugs into the front of the amp and it automatically sets the level of your speakers based on where they are placed. The process takes about 3 minutes and is very high tech. Adjusting the levels yourself is fun with the cool interactive menu's in this new model. The remote seems too simple when you first start using it, but when you figure out the ease and user friendly menu system built in, it makes you even more satisfied with the product. The models above this one are the A800, 1000 and 3000. The only difference is a little more power and more [outdated] hookups like s-video and analogs.Another great feature is the 12 pin hookup for the optional Ipod cradle specifically made for this model. The cradle is about 90 bucks (yds-12) and has great on screen capability with up to date ipods (3rd gen I-touch). You can even watch the digital movies on your you TV with this thing. All in all, this is a great buy. I will miss my old receiver, but this one is a no brainer, especially for Yamaha enthusiasts. Hope this helps.Danny

3need firmware update out of the box
By mustang941
Real easy to set up if you have hdmi. Sounds great after using the mic. check it with my slp meter and it was right on, didnt have to tweak it. Great price when newegg gave an ipod touch 4th gen. with it how can you wrong with that. shipped fast. The on screen GUI is great easy to use.Cons: I would have gave this unit 5 stars if it was shipped with updated firmware. It had 1.05 installed on the unit. With that on it, it would not pass the 3D signal through the unit. You would think that this unit as advertised would be able to send a 3D signal right out of the box but it won't. You have to go to Yamaha and down load the new firmware then burn it to a cd (do not use windows media center it will burn the cd but the receiver will not install the firmware at the end) use iTunes or another software to burn the cd. Then after that, you will have to find a dvd player or a cd player that will play the wave file that does not have a internal filters that degrades the file to unusable. I had to use 4 different players before I got one that worked. It was a borrowed player from a friend ( a OPPO dvd player high end) the file is 14 min. 11 sec after that it worked fine. But it came with a free Ipod so the extra hoops I had to jump through was worth it.Other Thoughts: If your lucky you will get one with the correct firmware. But if you dont good luck in updating it. It took me 4 days to do it. Even though its only a 20 min. process.

5Amazing receiver for the cost.
By Orbit
I purchased this receiver as a pre amplifier to replace my older Lexicon MC-1. I am impressed by its 7.2 channels pre-out quality. The YPAO sound optimization is flawless. The Yamaha RX-A700 is an amazing receiver for the cost. Highly recommended!

5Lots of AVR for the price
By Eric A. Murray
We had poor man's home theater by coming off the back of a Samsung BD player into two analog audio systems and out to 4 speakers. Brought the classy-looking A800 home and tossed away many RCA cables, all audio components and then did a simple HDMI-in for the sources, all within 15 minutes. Connected all 5 speaker cables and tuner antennas and powered up. OSD menu was a breeze... added our 5 speakers -- told it 'no Sub' so it uses our full-range fronts for LF, and next input the measurements to the speakers, and we were immediately up enjoying movies and games. Didn't even bother with the YPAO, but you can use that mic to auto-setup your speakers for your sweet-spot viewing/listening position. Tuner presets were automatic and it's easy to use. The quick buttons on the face are awesome for skipping fiddling with remote(s) to get started. Sony motion-flow on the Bravia still worked with the through 1080p signals. A great feature is having all the smart buttons on the remote -- change surround processing, jump to sources, pop-up the OSD for changes at any time, make it your universal, etc. With my Panamax power conditioner, Transparent Audio speaker cables, an Arcam Alpha9 CDP, and my trusty Boston Acoustics tower speakers, I'll soon be able to better rate the audio, but in listening to non-audiophile sources, I could get a sense of the good SN ratio, dynamic range and we found it very easy listening at moderate levels for long periods -- didn't feel we needed to drop the volume due to complex sections in music or suspense building in movies. My comparisons included similar line models of Denon, Pioneer, Marantz and Sony. My decision was based on listening to audio, using remotes, lifting the units, and the included features for the price.

5Great receiver!!
By CL
So I've had my RX-A800 for a few months now, and I can say that I am fully satisfied with it! I've got it wired to my 5.1 system, main LR speakers are bi-amped, too. I've got it hooked up to my TV, PS3, cable-box DVR, Nintendo, and my computer on occasion. Handles everything like a champ.Everything sounds great, but more than that, I love how it handles the video, as well. Makes everything so simple to wire, especially with HDMI. I can't say that the video-upscaling has really "wow"ed me, but I have no complaints about it, either (the Nintendo is the only non-HD device I have!).Likes:-HD Radio! Cool!-"Scene" buttons... instead of powering on, switching through all the inputs, just press "TV" or "BD/DVD" or "Radio" and it'll take you directly to that input, and set it to your preferred sound program (7.1, 2.1, etc).-On-screen display ... makes adjusting and fine-tuning the sound super easy, plus displays all the RDS radio tags for songs, etc.-Really good price compared to other units (including other Yamaha's!)-Works well with Harmony One remote"Dislikes":-I know this is reaching, but I think there are too many different sound-modes. "Concert Hall Vienna" or "Concert Hall Munich" or "Cellar Club" or "Roxy Theater" ... they all just sound extra reverby to me, and I prefer a clean, straight-from-the-recording sound, so I don't use them.-Bluetooth, iPod, and Sirius Radio adapters all cost extra.-The FM antenna needs an upgrade (it's just a loose wire).I highly recommend the RX-A800. Sure, the A1000 (or +) is probably even better, but that small step up would have been a large step up in price for me, so I'm happy with my purchase!

5This receiver does everything!
By Mark
I had a Denon 3800 reciever prior to replacing it with this yamaha. I bought a projector for my family room (still have plasma) so I wanted to upgrade to an av receiver that had two hdmi outputs for my tv and projector. I did moved from a $1200 130wt/ch Denon receiver to this $750 95wt/ch Yamaha. I can tell the power difference, Running 7 klipsch reference speakers, but not too bad. The receiver seems to do everything. Two hdmi outputs a. A must if you have a projector and tv, it's great to be able to do all the switching through the receiver. Also the hdmi pass through is great for being able to watch tv without the receiver. It has four scene buttons for DVD,TV,CD,Radio. These are great for the wife, very simple. You can set up all the settings (video/sound source, processor, speaker set up Etc) and save to the scene, then she just needs to push the button and not be intimidated by the receiver. A problem I had with my Denon setup. Btw, to this day I haven't found it in the manual, so after you set it up, press and hold the scene button on the remote to save the settings. I had to call Yamaha to see if it was possible. All the hdmi,av,audio, etc inputs are programable as well.Sound is great, although I'd give the edge to the Denon, but I think that was more due to the higher wattage. The auto speaker setup is great, set the mic in your sitting area and push a button, very simple. If you use component video, you only have two inputs, so if you need more you need to step to the next level, which is a bit more money, but everything is going hdmi. I bought the iPod dock for it has a great interface and is viewable on the tv.The only gripe I have, and I do reluctantly because I never understood why someone would complain about this if the product was good, but the manual is very difficult to find anything. It wastes too many pages on the stupid no brained stuff and completely misses the custom setup stuff. It took me a good week to get it fully setup how I wanted and two calls to Yamaha. I knew it did things from the ads, but the dedfault setting had them off and I couldn't find thein the manual or took way too long to search (scene program, 6.1 vs. 7.1 setup, hdmi pass through). Once you know how it's a simple menu or keystroke, but not intuitive. But manual and complexity of set up, I'd recommend it to anyone. I guess the complexity is worth it to have it's flexibility of total control of buttons, inputs and outputs. Geat rreciever.
