Good Limited Slip for 2WD F150s and other 9.75"/34 spline Fords

The factory limited slip on 2WD F150s so equipped are clutch-plate based, which wear out rather quickly regardless of driving style. If you need to replace your worn out one (or want to insure you actually have some traction), don't spend half a grand on parts and labor just to buy or rebuild the weak stock traction system. At least upgrade to a gear-based limited slip like this Trutrac, which will last indefinitely and have a stronger lockup. This will give you half a chance to keep from getting stuck in the first place when off camber, as well as a better chance of getting unstuck if you made some wrong driving decisions. On the street, it will mechanically provide traction to a non-slipping wheel, but otherwise, it's disengaged and not wearing anything out.If you TRULY plan on spending a significant amount of time on challenging dirt roads (farm, remote camping or hunting), you should consider a full locker in the rear, which will guarantee you full traction/power to the non-spinning wheel. For 2WD F150 owners with a 9.75" 34 spline rear, your choices are either a full time Detroit Locker, or a selectable air locker from ARB. I run the Detroit in my Jeep, which only takes a moderate skill level to drive safely around corners on the street. With a much longer wheelbase, an F150 would be much easier to drive on the street with a Detroit. But, if you have the bucks, it's tough to beat a part-time/selectable locker like the ARB, which is off, until you need it. The only downside to the ARB is the required onboard air compressor purchase, which could fail sooner of later and cost a couple of bills to replace.So there you go! For 2WD F150 drivers with 9.75" rears, the Trutrac is the best limited slip, the Detroit is the best full time locker, and the ARB is currently your only choice in a selectable rear locker. For a 95/5 usage model of a daily driver, I think the Trutrac makes a lot of practical sense and is the easiest on the wallet.p.s. The product listed here is no longer a "Detroit" brand locker. It is now owned by Eaton, so that would make it an Eaton Trutrac limited slip, vs. the Eaton Detroit full time Locker. Google Eaton, ARB, OX for overviews of lockers.
