By Joe S.
Hurricane Sandy knocked out our power for 9 days. We ran this generator 15-24 hours a day during that span. We ran (2) 20 cubic ft chest freezers, (1) 14 cubic ft fridge, and (1) 27 cubic ft fridge/freezer on it all at once (we connected two first, after 4 mins, we added the other 2, as starting 4 fridge/freezers at once would create quite a surge). Throw in the a few lights, some phone chargers, and our gas range (power is only needed for the igniters). This generator has worked flawlessly. I did the initial oil change after about 40 hours (I think the manual wants it much sooner) and the oil was quite clean. This generator is quieter than my neighbors' as when I go outside, I hear theirs louder than ours (the specs on this unit show that it is quiet for a generator - this is useful if many of your neighbors are running generators and you are worried about theft. As long as neighbors are running their generators, and you have yours hidden, no one will know you have one.). The generator seems to run through its 4 gallons in about 12 hours. Although it seems to do better after the engine has broken in now. We started to get quite cold without heat, so I even hooked up my gas furnace to it which requires power for the blower mostly (disconnected 2 of the freezers when running it). I don't know what I would have done without it. After Hurricane Sandy, it was very difficult to find an open gas station. This unit seems to be efficient on fuel, yet it will run enough things in your home to be useful. I feel that we could have added even more load, but I didn't want to be stranded since there were no generators available in stores for hundreds of miles. If you are using only the 115 volt plugs, make sure the switch is on 115 and not 230 as it seemed to use much more fuel when we accidentally left it on the 230 volt setting.Just a word of caution: It seems more and more people have generators these days (judging by the number of folks standing in line with Gas Cans during the Sandy aftermath). In the days following the storm, I witnessed lines that were over 1 mile long. The gas stations need power to pump gas, and very very few gas stations have generators themselves. Sandy knocked out power in entire counties. If you are going to take the plunge for a generator, please make sure you also purchase several very large fuel containers, and please do fill them with a 2-3 day supply before any storm hits. During the first 3 days without power, I spent at least 10 hours total waiting in line to purchase gasoline, because I only had 4 gallons worth of gas cans. If you are ever in a situation like I described, bring the generator to the gas station too, as you can get an extra 4 gallons that way.It is also worth noting, that there are portable generators that will run on (all of) 3 different types of fuel: Gasoline, propane, and natural gas. They cost about 30 - 50% more than ones that just run on gasoline. The day after Sandy, there was no shortage of prefilled propane tanks (all the Lowes and Home Depots in my area, had plenty in stock and were open the day after the storm).Update 03/19/13: Some random comments that I left out of the review: This generator does not have an electric starter. I am glad I didn't shell out the extra money for the electric start feature as this generator (with choke closed) started on the first or second pull each time. Even after a 3 month layover, it still started on the 4th pull and that's with the old fuel. I found that the wheels are needed on a generator this size. We were constantly moving the generator (to share it with others, and to bring it to the gas station). It isn't too heavy to lift briefly for me (male, average build, 40's). If you need to lift it more than a few minutes, I would recommend 2 (or more) people. You cannot fit this generator in the trunk of a sedan. I was able to put it where the wheels were in the trunk (which prevents it from sliding out) and the rest of it was hanging out the back of my car. This was acceptable for transporting the generator short distances at 15 mph or less. If you are going to do more than that, you will need a truck or van.

By Stvnc
The DuroMax XP4400-CA is a strong little work horse. I've had one for 2 years and use it to power my travel trailer. I have run it day and nite and it never over heats. Usually for my needs one tank of gas lasts all day and into the nite. It supplies all of my electrical needs with little effort. I don't have A/C or I would probably need the larger model. Outside my trailer it sounds loud to me but when I am inside I hardly notice the noise. You have to make sure that it is level or it won't run properly. My electrical needs are: Microwave, Refrigerator, Water Heater, lights, Television, and Toaster Oven. I can't run the Microwave and Toaster Oven at the same time because of the wattage output. You never have to worry about using too much oil because it hardly uses any oil at all. It is easy to start, usually just one pull does it. The wheels and handles make it easy to move around. This is a strong generator and almost maintenance free. I say almost maintenance free because it is a good idea to clean the air filter once in a while, but other than that and checking the oil; as long as there is gas in the tank this generator keeps on working problem free. If you are thinking about getting a generator and you want a reliable one with a low price this is the one to get.

By J. Johnson
It's a really nice little generator for the money. We ordered prior to Sandy and got one for less than $400. So far I haven't had to use it in an emergency but the power output is good in all my testing. I run it for about an hour a month just to keep it in working order.Pros: It has a good wheel kit included. The fit and finish was good for what it is. Starts easily. Lots of power options on the control panel.Cons: A little on the loud side. When the power is off all over the neighborhood it's going to stick out like a skunk at a campfire. However big your generator is, you always wish it was bigger. Really this is as big of a generator as I'd suggest for emergency power because of fuel consumption. It's not too bad on gas but over a few days it'll go through a bit. You have no choice but to store some for emergencies which is a pain.A better choice is probably a multi-fuel setup so you can tap natural gas but that was a wee bit more money than we wanted to spend at the time. Since we use lots of gasoline for yard maintenance it works for us but I worry about getting caught short. I'd also look at one of those mini 900w generators to conserve on gasoline while keeping the furnace running.
