By Kieran
This knife is a very solid folding knife. Here are some points about both the knife and the steel that is used after over 2 years of using this knife:Potential negatives--The steel used for this knife does not sharpen as easily as many carbon steels (you will have to work a bit if you'd like to get this knife sharp enough to split hairs - although that is far from the purpose of this knife). The X15 steel also does not keep an ultra sharp edge for long (after spending a lot of work getting it there), but will remain usable well after sharpening.-The handle is very well designed if you are using this in water or are wearing gloves as it will not slip. However, it is not great for prolonged applications when you are exerting a lot of force with bare fingers griping the knife - expect diamond shaped indents on your palms after you've used it.Definite Pro's:-This knife/steel is virtually rust proof. After many uses by saltwater, this knife has done great. Make sure to still maintain it by wiping & drying it after heavy use.-Even the components on the knife's opening and closing mechanism are virtually rust proof.-The Opening Mechanism is superb. There is light resistance to opening (it will not randomly open in your pocket or on your person), but the spring loaded action allows it to be opened with a flick of the wrist. After thousands of opening/closings, the action on this folding knife is as good as Day one. It is also very solid when it is open, and does not budge from it's locked position.Overall, this is a fantastic knife. It may not make sense for you if you are not going to be using this in a marine environment or are not interested in a rust-proof knife. In that case, there are a lot of other options. But for the light maintenance, great build, and overall durability of this knife - it is an easy 5 star recommendation as it sets the bar for rust-proof folding knives.

By John Brooks
I bought this to "replace" a 53S Tanto Griptilian Combo Edge Knife (which I loved.) Thankfully, and due to some karmic principle of the universe, the old knife resurfaced the very same day this was delivered. I feel like I got a two-fer!I love the handle and the weight. Although made of different steel, my kitchen scale wasn't sophisticated enough to tell a weight difference between the two knives. Locking mechanism feels a little stiff but my sense is that will work it self out.You can move the pocket clip to either side but in reading the manual (a knife with a manual?) it appears that the knife comes ready to be worn in the right pocket. I've been wearing the other knife in the same configuration in my LEFT pocket for two+ years without knowledge or incident. I'm sure now that I'm aware it's set up for the right pocket and not the left, I'll cut my finger off somehow. The screws to remove and change the clip are easily accessible. You probably wont need a rotohammer to get them out. That said, on further inspection, it looks like you'd need the special Benchmade tool set to do it (again with the manual.)I did some research in some knife forums and found that the X15 steel is a change for Benchmade. They used another grade of steel in this "marine" grade blade in the past. There's some dispute about which was better but it appears they did it because this steel holds an edge longer. I do have the idea from the cursory research that this blade doesn't hold an edge quite as well as their normal steel but it's virtually indestructible. Seemed like quite a few of the folks talking about these things used them as dive knives. I'm a little concerned about the edge issue but I'm more concerned about flat out durability which is why I bought this knife.I've carried a knife of nearly the exact same form factor for 2+ years and have zero complaints. It's my "daily driver." I dont take it to the airport but pretty much everywhere else and even in a suit several times a month. I've seen Benchmades with a smoother handle but I appreciate a little more heft and grip in exchange for a slimmer, smoother body.I also found in my poking around on the web that people "customize" these Griptillians more than people used to do with a '57 Chevy. It's pretty impressive. My sense is that, for the money, this is a great knife and if I could rationalize buying more, I would :) Unfortunately, one knife sorta does the trick for me.

Very happy with this knife. If only had it for one month but i use it every day. The clip stays secure to even my running shorts. Factory sharp although it could be more sharp which is the only reason why I didn't rate 5 stars. Functions very well.
