By Noel
I purchased this dimmer for handling a huge electrical load from a pair of 18 x 40W light fixtures that I wanted on a single switch. In total the dining room lighting (simulated candles in a southwestern motif) is roughly 1.5kW so you really cannot find dimmers at your neighborhood do-it-yourself store or superstore. The other choices I found were in the multiple hundred dollar ranges. But you can easily install it yourself. It has only 3 wires. The Lutron Athena Lutron T-2000 Athena Inc 2000W Dimmer has a gold-anodized aluminum housing (no tarnishing with real micro-thin gold that is chemically bonded to the aluminum). This is not only functional but very striking and completely replaces a 2 receptacle wall plate. The potentiometer does fit in a single electrical box (rectangular blue standard), so if you have a single and there is about 2" clearance on either side, there is no need to cut drywall. It will also fit into a double box but you will not be able to install a second receptacle such as a second switch, outlet, or GFCI. The picture that Amazon and some others have is a single receptacle unit but I was sent a double and as most of the pictures show a double, I don't think there are any singles left.Behind the gold plate there is a metal radiator that is about 5/8" deep with several black fins. This radiator is necessary so that the dimmer will not retain heat. I left mine exposed and it looks very good. The unit is quite elegant and matched my decor well. I plan to save a lot of energy with what would otherwise be stadium lighting in my dining room or possibly a fire from using a lesser 600 or 1000W dimmer. These are fine for smaller applications but were inadequate for my electrical load and they are much much cheaper of course. The dimmer has a clear plastic knob with a dial and rim in black so you can see the gold behind it. This knob functions very well and has a smooth travel from start to finish and back. The dial is clockwise for increasing brightness which is standard and it has a small catch at the end to indicate that the light is off.The reason I rate this a 4 and not a 5 is that the switch does not offer a push-in knob which would offer instant on and off control with a preset brightness level which would allow me to always have the same brightness if I wanted to just turn it on. I assume that this was not featured so as not to have an instant 2kW load placed on a breaker, but some electronics inside could have managed the load by slowly increasing it when the switch was pushed on. Those same electronics could have gradually dimmed the switch to fade out over the standard 11 seconds. The Athena is also not offered as a 3-way switch BTW, so if you need to control from multiple places, it will not work.I would recommend the Athena for any single-pole application where you have a high load, or just want a fancy, elegant, and simple switch. Make sure you have the clearance needed.
