By Aaron
I had a socket burn out in one of the lamps and ePhoto mailed me a replacement. They didn't replace the bulb, but I suppose those are considered expendables and not covered under warranty. I purchased a bunch of 4mm hex screws to bolster hinges and have added a homemade eggcrate to control spill. Alzo Digital makes extremely affordable replacement bulbs in 3200k and 5600k so overall I'm quite satisfied with my purchase. The only complaint would be that the stands don't fit the mounts on the lights very well, but if you have better stands or are mounting these on a ceiling grid you'll be fine.

My review and rating are based on the price to cost ratio of the product. Certainly there are lights out there with more features and accessories, and while these have their drawbacks, I think for the money they are hard to beat.I've used Kino Flo Diva 400's fairly extensively, which cost about $1200 each. Honestly, the build quality on these ePhoto lights are far superior. The Kino Flo's main shell consists of fluted plastic and very cheaply made and not very well thought out components. Although these certainly aren't the most durable lights you will find, they do feel very substantial and the metal housing is made well. The barn doors on mine were a bit loose, but after some tightening, they are fine and seem to stay where you put them. I really don't like the reflectors on the insides of the doors, but they appear to be removable. I just haven't tried yet. Since the bulbs are the same as the expensive Kino's, the light quality is very similar if not exactly the same. The light produced is fairly soft as is, but of course you can always clip on a diffusion gel to the doors to get it even larger and softer. I bought the daylight bulb version which seem to be on the cooler end of the "daylight" range, but still perfectly acceptable. I also got some 1/2 CTO gels to make them tungsten when needed. The stands included are actually way better than I thought they would be. That being said, I will use some heavier duty ones, especially if they are used higher than about 5 feet. They get a bit wobbly for my taste. The 2 on/off Light switches work well to control the two light banks, but I do miss the handy dimmer on the Kino's. Kino's come with a case too, which is also missed. All in all, for the price, you can't go wrong with these. Just be aware that they are a little heavier than some others, which can be good and bad. They don't have a true dimmer like the more expensive ones, and not having a case makes for more difficult transportation. I'm very happy with these and will probably buy some more in the future. They shipped out next day too.
