4Lego Exclusive for 2010
By R. Ferguson
**Update December 2011: Lego has delisted this set. Once Toys R Us runs through its stock, expect third-party retailers to boost the price to high levels.**I am the same nut-job parent who reviews many of the other Lego trains on Amazon. So while I am partial to Lego, I'll give you as good a review as I can.The Public Transport set is supposed to be an exclusive set sold only through Toys R Us and Lego. Some smaller retailers have gotten a hold of it. The set itself was the result of a customer vote among three City themed sets. The centerpiece of the set is a smart, blue and white, three-section light-rail train. The vehicle uses Lego's small train wheels; this makes for a more compact design, but these wheels have higher friction than the standard wheels and cannot be powered. The wheels fit Lego's L-gauge track (used by all of the other Lego trains). You don't need track for this vehicle but I find the kids enjoy running it on a layout as a push train. The three sections of the train are connected with four ball and socket joints. The center segment sports an ingenious design feature: the wheels can slide sideways in order to accommodate track geometry on turns. I very much like that Lego has bothered to make a light-rail train. I'm not entirely enamored with the design, however. It is unusually tall, such that when placed next to full size trains, it can come out taller (in spite of its low-to-the-ground appearance). There are three road vehicles: a green and white touring coach, an orange and white street sweeper, and a yellow convertible. I think the coach is the best bus that Lego has ever offered (and it is arguably a notch better than the light-rail train). The street sweeper is capable and has sides that lift up. The convertible is not terribly noteworthy. There are three simple structures, each one of them able to serve as a bus or train stop. One of them includes a little news stand with a postcard rack, coffee machine, recycle bin, mailbox and transport map. There are also six mini-figures and a green bicycle. This set works best as an addition to a child's city layout. If your child is expecting a more traditional train, check out some of the other offerings from Lego, especially the City trains that come as complete sets (motors, track, etc.).Since there are not many places where you can actually see this set built or handled, I recommend that you check out some of the Youtube reviews that are available (likewise for the other Lego trains).Update: a fellow over on Eurobricks managed to fit a motor (with infrared receiver and battery) into two tram sets. So motorization is doable, but it is quite an investment.Cheers

5Lego City Transportation Set
By Classact
I purchased this for my grandson's 5th birthday. With support, he built the vehicles and other non-traditional items. He loves it....As a Lego brand product, I am assured of quality and workmanship. Great purchase.
