Product Description
The SATDOCK22RE USB and eSATA Standalone Duplicator Dock lets you duplicate/clone an existing hard drive without the use of a host computer system, or can be connected to a computer system for use as an external hard drive dock. As a hard drive duplicator, you can create an exact 1 to 1 sector clone from one hard drive to another, including partition and boot sector information and all data, at a rate of 72MB/second - ensuring data integrity and consistency for sensitive operations, such as data recovery. As an external hard drive dock, the duplicator/dock supports plug-and-play installation and can be connected to your host computer through USB 2.0 or eSATA, providing data transfer speeds up to 480Mbps or 3Gbps respectively from the hard drives to your computer system. Large capacity drives (tested with up to 4TB 3.5" and 1TB 2.5" drives per bay) can be used to greatly enhance your computer''s storage/backup capabilities. Not having to install the hard drives into an enclosure or tray system allows for quick setups - a perfect solution for situations that require swapping through multiple drives, which combined with no driver or software installation requirements delivers a convenient and versatile storage solution. The value of this hard drive docking station can be extended, using a SATA to IDE hard drive adapter (SAT2IDEADP), which enables you to use any 2.5 or 3.5in IDE hard drive in a SATA hard drive dock slot.

By Daniel L. Taylor
I purchased this because I often have to duplicate large drives for backup purposes in case I lose something in the process of repair and file recovery, system transfers, updates, etc. It came in handy right away and I've already duplicated about a half dozen drives with it.I don't know why but I was expecting the duplication function to be faster. I would guess that the drives I've cloned would be capable of higher speeds then this duplicator was able to achieve. Still, I wouldn't call it slow, just not as fast as I had hoped. (If you want slow, duplicate a pair of 2 TB USB drives.)The nice thing is that it truly is a stand alone, plug in, run, and forget device. You don't have to tie up a computer for hours to duplicate the drives. The progress bar is accurate and it seems to be very reliable. If you frequently need to duplicate drives then I recommend it.I struggled between 4 and 5 stars because I would really have liked to see StarTech squeeze more performance out of this. But in the end I'm giving it 5 because it's simple and just works. I needed that in drive duplication.

This is an overall outstanding product. I use it to make Disaster Recovery backups of servers, to backup workstations, laptops,I use it to duplicate XBOX360 o/s hard drive, so that I can have the XBOX up and running [immediately] if the other drive goes bad.I use it to duplicate the PS3 o/s hard drive - ditto as for the above - in case PS3 HD goes bad, I am back up and running with almost zero down-time.It works for duplicating Windows, Linux, virtually ANYTHING - since it is a 'sector-by-sector' duplicator!I [moved UP] from a 320GB laptop SATA drive to a 500GB in about 2 hours. I just placed the 2 drives in the dock, being careful to put the 'source' in the source slot and the target in the 'target slot.' I am typing this, as we speak, on the DUPLICATE HARD DRIVE - that's how flawless it is!The only ONE problem I have (and it appears to be a Windows problem - not a StarTech problem) is that, no matter how you duplicate the drive, Windows "Disk Management" utility in Windows 7 sees both the small 'recovery partition (11GB in my case) and the o/s drive as "100% free" even though, clearly, they have plenty of space being used. And NO, THIS IS *NOT* A MATTER OF 'EXTENDING' THE PARTITION TO USE ALL THE SPACE - I'VE DONE THAT, AND IT DOES NOT FIX THE ISSUE! But, Windows explorer reports the proper amount of capacity, space used, and space available, so it's not a big issue. Appears to be something ONLY with the Windows Disk Management utility. Someone suggested "blowing away" the recovery partition, before duplicating the drive, BUT that "blows away" any chance to do a "factory restore;" so that is NOT an option, and should not even be recommended by anyone with common sense! Again, clearly, it is a glitch in Windows Disk Management utility, and Microsoft needs to fix that. I mean, HOW HARD CAN IT BE TO COUNT "SPACE USED VS. SPACE AVAILABLE?" I have NOT yet tried a 'repair,' which may work; i.e., have Windows 'repair' itself, and maybe this whole "partition alignment' issue will solve itself. BUT, again, it's very odd that Windows Explorer reports PERFECTLY, but Windows Disk Management does not! Sounds to me like the two of them are written by different folks, or... something?[UPDATE: I *FOUND* the issue!!!! On a "clone" of Win 7 for example, the D: drive gets RE-ASSIGNED TO THE DVD DRIVE!!!D: DRIVE IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE RECOVERY PARTITION! Guess what, now the recovery partition is UN-assigned - not assigned a drive letter, and it will NOT let you assign one! Right-click on the 11GB recovery partition and the only option is "Help."So, I changed DVD drive letter to "E:" - but have not rebooted yet to see if it lets me assign a letter to the recovery partition. THESE ARE THINGS THAT *BOTH* STARTECH [AND] MICROSOFT SHOULD BE NOTICING! DUH.[END OF UPDATE]And it works great as a spare - temporary or permanent, external hard drive dock!I would highly recommend this device. I would purchase it again.I [WILL] purchase more of these! I may even purchase some of the competing devices, to compare speed and so forth.Good job on this one StarTech!

By J. Clark
This dock/duplicator is great! I have only used the USB interface long enough to be sure that it worked. I use it primarily for backups but have used it to restore and to clone with the pc. The biggest time saver is the STANDALONE copying. The progress bar is accurate and it is just a matter of starting it and forgetting it. I have used it with 2.5" and 3.5" drives but most of my use is 2.5". When using it pc based it is just a matter of plugging the expresscard WITH PORT MULTIPLIER into the notebook that I am using. The only negative is that it does not have power switches for the individual stations, I tend to leave drives in the stations. I am very satisfied and I do not work for StarTech.
