By Robert Sanges
This brake is for a limited audience: Road levers with disc brakes. The cable pull on road levers require a special disc brake caliper. As far as I know the Avid BB5 and BB7 road are the only options. Just to be clear for anyone looking at this item - it is for use with road brake levers not mountain brake levers. These are super simple to install and setup. It has adjustments for both the inner (stationary) and outer (moving) pad. The alignment is practically automatic - just follow the instructions. Another advantage is that the pads for these are easier to find than the BB5.It's very nice to have the extra stopping power and smoother modulation on a loaded touring bike. I recommend anyone shopping for a new commuter or long distance tourer consider a frame, fork, and wheels that can use disc brakes.

By Louis J. Yoo
Just completed replacing my front BB5 brake assembly. The BB7 is a far better brake assembly than the BB5. Better pads, pad clips, dual pad adjustments, and much less rotor drag. Installation instructions comes in a number of different languages making the english print very small and hard to read. Downloaded and printed english version from the Internet. Installation was easy but I had to do a slightly different pad to rotor alignment. The BB7 brake assembly does not come with an integrated adjuster to adjust cable tension like the BB5 does. Instead the manufacturer provides an in-line barrel adjuster with very basic installation instructions which took me a little while to figure out. In-line barrel adjuster comes in three pieces (upper black tapered brake cable cap, adjuster, and lower shiny metal brake cable cap) which is installed on the brake cable between the brake assembly and road lever. This means you have to cut out a section of the outer brake cable shield (approximately 1 inch)which requires some care to do. First fit the upper black tapered cap over the upper brake cable shield tapered portion down. Next insert the tapered end of the black cable cap into the top of the barrel adjuster. Top of the adjuster is the printed end. Finally cover the lower brake shield with the metal cap and insert into the bottom of the barrel adjuster. Now connect the brake cable to the BB7 brake assembly. An illustration with the written installation procedures would have been very helpful. The in-line barrel adjuster worked well with adjusting road brake lever tension. Would have given the BB7 5 stars if not for the in-line barrel adjuster instructions.

By Bike_Boy
I was a concerned that I would feel guilty getting a set of BB7 brakes when the stock BB5 brakes had not even wore out their pads yet. No worries! The BB5 brakes are admittingly not horrible, they just are not that good compared to their big brother, the BB7. The pads on the BB7 are much larger and are held in position more like what one might expect in other applications. As such, there is less brake rub and feel MUCH more consistent. I appreciate being able to adjust both pads individually. Basically, you get your brakes set up right ONCE, and then adjust the pads as they wear. And as the pad seems to retract more linearly than the BB5, they can be run much tighter.Of course the bolted, forged construction of the caliper is also appreciated. The BB5 is the keep it simple approach. The BB7 is more about doing it right. Now where is the BB9?... Do it right and then some! The only real negative is that I wish the finish would be different than the BB5... and that is a rather insignicant negative. I just wish they would be either black or polished.
