I've been a fan of James Root's playing for a long time, but didn't consider buying one of his signature models because I prefer passive Seymour Duncan pick-ups over EMGs. I had been wanting a hardtail Charvel with two humbuckers for a long time and couldn't find one and also couldn't at all justify the time and money commitment to have one built. This guitar ended my search. The neck has the famous 12" fretboard radius that a lot of Charvel (and other brand) "superstrat" style guitars are known for. The EMGs are extremely focused and powerful, and if you're into lower tunings (which if you're looking at this guitar, you probably are, will work well. I ended up replacing the EMGs with passive Seymour Duncans (Duncan Distortion in the bridge, Pearly Gates in the neck). It's a string through body set-up, and the bridge is very similar to the old Charvel brass bridges of the late 70's-early 80's, although this one is painted black and seems to be stainless steel. Needless to say, it's a hardtail, so there's no tremolo block cover plate on the back that Strats normally have. The bridge, and the whole guitar in general are built to last, and should last for decades if you take decent care of it, and it stays in tune forever once your strings are well stretched and broken in. All told, this is a player's guitar. It has a pick-up selector switch and a single volume pot. There isn't any fancy binding or inlays, "popped grain", fancy finishes, or anything else to make this guitar really expensive. This thing is made to be played and abused, not hung on a wall. There aren't even any inlays at all, but there are side markers. Also, a word of warning, the photo here on Amazon is from the Fender website and is a photo of the actual Custom Shop model built for Jim Root. The actual guitar has a warmer, darker maple on the neck - not white maple as shown. Also, the finish is not bone white, but more of an antique white - it's actually a very soft yellow. A Google image search of this guitar should help clarify.Hopefully this review helps you out if you're thinking of buying this guitar, and haven't been able to check one out locally (like me). All in all, I have no regrets over buying this guitar and plan to enjoy it for years to come.
